Take My Breath Away
Breathe, just
breathe.
Frightened eyes flash open. She realises she is choking.
Panic
Smoke. Black smoke.
First instinct. Get up. Get out.
Not that easy is it? When your lungs are clogged and your eyes are blank.
She tries to scream a desperate warning to her lover.
Nothing. Nothing comes out.
She claws at her throat, breath fighting, body shutting down. The walls
are closing in.
A hand reaches her. Tara. A powerless Witch smouldered by a mortal
element.
Fire
Smoke
Heat
They cling together, too weak to escape, too tired to try.
The fire roars, it’s just outside. But it is nothing compared to the noise
of screams that fill the blackened air.
They close their blinded eyes and pray. Not to God. Who is he? They pray
to whoever will listen. They don’t expect miracles, they know it’s too
late for them. But for the others, please let some of them live. Please
don’t let them die like this.
**
He strides from the campus, petrol can in one hand, cigarette in the
other. He discards the can and draws deeply on the cigarette.
Smoke. Beautiful smoke.
It fills his lungs and the screams fill his heart.
He didn’t do this for himself. Not just for the hell of it. It was a
punishment. Retribution on those that thought they were better.
Spike smiles and watches his pet approach. The boy looks shy and a little
confused, his mind still adjusting to eternal darkness.
“Hello there, pet. Does this make you feel better?”
The boy nods
“You must be starvin’”
The boy nods
“What do you want to eat?”
The boy speaks through gritted deadly fangs, pain and new found power
shining in his dark eyes “Mother”
Spike smiles again, his boy is home, forever.
